Just got an e-mail from my uncle with this awesome picture of my grandfather and the story behind it.
“NBA playoffs in 1983. The Bucks are playing the Boston Celtics.
Although the Bucks have a very good team, the Celtics have Larry Bird,
Robert Parish, Kevin McHale and others that make a great team. The
Celtics won the championship in 1981 (in 1984 and 86 too). This
picture was taken at the end of the fourth game in Milwaukee in a
seven game series.
The Celtics general manager (and former coach) was Red Auerbach. Red
was a legendary coach and GM and had won many championships. Red
could be arrogant and surly when the Celtics lost. He was known for
lighting a cigar in the fourth quarter when he knew the Celtics were
going to win.
Against all odds, the Bucks have won the first three games. They have
a commanding lead in the fourth quarter…..so Dad lit up a cigar.
After the game, Red saw Dad’s cigar and refused to shake his hand.
After finishing off the Celtics, the Bucks lost in the semifinals to
the Philadelphia 76ers.”
edit: added a click-through link to the picture for those who were asking what his role on the team was
